Brad Meltzer: Book of Lies
Brad Meltzer, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Book of Fate, returns with his most thrilling and emotionally powerful novel to date -- The Book of Lies (Grand Central Publishing). In Chapter Four of the Bible, Cain kills Abel. It is the world's most famous murder. But the Bible is silent about one key detail: the weapon Cain used to kill his brother. That weapon is still lost to history. In 1932, Mitchell Siegel was killed by three gunshots to his chest. While mourning, his son dreamed of a bulletproof man and created the world's greatest hero: Superman. And like Cain's murder weapon, the gun used in this unsolved murder has never been found. Today in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Cal Harper comes face-to-face with his family's greatest secret: his long-lost father, who's been shot with a gun that traces back to Mitchell Siegel's 1932 murder. But before Cal can ask a single question, he and his father are attacked by a ruthless killer tattooed with the ancient markings of Cain. And so begins the chase for the world's first murder weapon. What does Cain, history's greatest villain, have to do with Superman, the world's greatest hero? And what do two murders, committed thousands of years apart, have in common? Presented in collaboration with Florida Center for the Literary Arts. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 7pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

Shakespeare's As You Like It
Under the artistic leadership of Ricky J. Martinez, New Theatre has refined its focus on new work by producing a "Nouveau Classic" blend of classics and new works for the upcoming season, beginning with one of the Bard's most accessible romantic comedies, As You Like It, which follows Shakespeare's gorgeous heroine, Rosalind, into a forest of possibilities. The nature of true love versus romantic love are put to the test amidst hilarious misunderstandings, gender confusions, and mistaken identities. Performances are 8pm Thursday through Saturday, plus 5:30pm on select Sundays, through September 14. Call 305-443-5909. http://www.new-theatre.org

Betrayed At GableStage

The play explores the complex relationships among the Iraqis themselves, and with their American supervisor, as they struggle to find purpose while a country collapses around them. Singing In The Rain at Cosford Cinema
After years of honing his skills on the vaudeville stage, hoofer Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has finally reached the top and become a star of the silent screen. He has his confidence shattered when ingenue Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) dismisses film actors as "shadows" without substance. After getting over the insult, he falls hard for her - much to the consternation of his costar, the sexy, selfish Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who wants Don all to herself. But they have career troubles too. The wild popularity of The Jazz Singer has studios scrambling to change from silent films to talkies, and Lina's shrill voice and Don's stiff acting left the preview audiences roaring with laughter. There's only once way to save that movie and their careers -- turn the film into a musical, with Kathy secretly dubbing Lina's lines and songs. The film begins at 8pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.com.miami.edu/cosford
