Free Wine Tasting At Treehouse Liquors
Treehouse Liquors at 4708 S. LeJeune Road is presenting a free wine tasting of Barbera from the Piemonte region in Italy from 6 to 8pm. Barbera comes in a bewildering range of styles, from the young, cheap, and spritzy to powerful, intense, highly priced wines that need extended cellaring. However, certain characteristics are constant none the less: a deep ruby color; a full body with notably low levels of tannins; and pronounced acidity. This Barbera is an easy drinking wine, the lack of heavy tannins softens the pucker that often accompanies Italian reds, great with grilled food or pasta. Take a bottle home for the sale price of $9.95 (normally $12.95). Call Austin at 786-268-2740.

Touch Of Evil At Cosford Cinema
Directed by Orson Welles, this baroque nightmare of a south-of-the-border mystery is considered to be one of the great movies of its genre, with Welles both directed and starred in it. On honeymoon with his new bride, Susan (Janet Leigh), Mexican-born policeman Mike Vargas (Charlton Heston) agrees to investigate a bomb explosion. In so doing, he incurs the wrath of local police chief Hank Quinlan (Welles), a corrupt, bullying behemoth with a perfect arrest record. Vargas suspects that Quinlan has planted evidence to win his past convictions, and he isn't about to let the suspect in the current case be railroaded. Touch of Evil dissects the nature of good and evil in a hallucinatory, nightmarish ambience, helped by the shadow-laden cinematography of Russell Metty. This is the 1998 restored version based on a 58-page memo written by Welles after he was barred from the editing room during the film's original postproduction. The film begins at 9pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.com.miami.edu/cosford
