Mark Sarvas: Harry, Revised
Harry, Revised (Bloomsbury, $24.99) is the hilarious and tender story of Harry Rent, a down-on-his-luck widower, who tries to reinvent himself following his wife's untimely death. Harry's emotional journey takes him from his own solipsistic and outrageously misdirected fantasies about an obsidian-haired, twenty-two-year-old waitress at his local greasy spoon to the tenuous beginnings of an actual personal transformation. At once deeply moving and darkly comedic, Harry, Revised is an extraordinary novel about the measure of a man's worth. It's also a sophisticated and sterling debut by Mark Sarvas, the founder of the popular literary blog, The Elegant Variation. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 5pm. Rear Window At Cosford Cinema
Alfred Hitchcock's classic Rear Window is both confined and multi leveled: both its story and visual perspective are dictated by its protagonist's imprisonment in his apartment from which both he and the audience observe the lives of his neighbors. Photographer L.B. "Jeff" Jeffries is a voyeur by trade -- a professional photographer sidelined by an accident while on assignment. His immersion in the human drama (and comedy) visible from his window is a by-product of his boredom, underlined by the disapproval of his girlfriend and a wisecracking visiting nurse. Yet when the invalid wife of his neighbor disappears, he enlists the two women to help him determine where she has gone. Starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter and Raymond Burr. The film begins at 6pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.com.miami.edu/cosford
