104th Bloomsday In Coral Gables
Bloomsday invokes the name of Leopold Bloom, a principal character in James Joyce's notorious novel Ulysses. On June 16, 1904, Bloom set out on a day-long odyssey of Dublin and encountered more trial and tribulations than ever affected the original Ulysses. At 5:30pm, after a Bloomsday proclamation from the Lord Mayor of Coral Gables, join us for dramatic readings from Ulysses by professionals from Actors' Playhouse at Books and Books, 265 Aragon. Following the reading, a piper and some drummers will lead the merry group (many in period costume) to John Martin's Irish Pub and Restaurant at 253 Miracle Mile for a special Bloomsday feast and live music.

Garth Stein: The Art of Racing in the Rain
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man. A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain (HarperCollins, $23.95) is Garth Stein's beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life... as only a dog could tell it. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com
