Michelle Concepcion Volver: Recent Paintings
ArtSpace Virginia Miller Galleries invites you to an opening reception for Michelle Concepcion Volver: Recent Paintings at 7pm. Her abstract paintings are an enigma: abstract compositions that evoke diametrically different interpretations. Some viewers see microscopic organisms; others, asteroids; still others, aquatic plant forms. Contributing to the varying interpretations of Concepcion's subject matter is their extraordinary illusion of texture. The gallery is located at 169 Madeira. Susana Rodriguez: Shadows
The Americas Collection is pleased to present a poignant exhibition brought to us by the argentine artist Susana Rodriguez. The conception of this series came about in 2006 when the artist began to observe the streets of New York City as they got attacked by the fast flowing of anonymous bodies always accompanied by their mutating shadows. Oblivious to the artist's critical eye and unaware of their own environment, the flock of human masses seemed to mechanically dance to the beat of a silent rhythm that effusively pushed them through their chaotic existence. Meet Susana Rodriguez from 7 to 10pm at The Americas Collection, 2440 Ponce. Call 305-446-5578. http://www.americascollection.com

Emily Giffin: Love the One You're With
Ellen's relationship to Andy doesn't just seem perfect on the surface, it really is perfect. She loves his family, and everything about him, including that he brings out the best in her. That is, until Ellen unexpectedly runs into Leo. The one who got away. The one who brought out the worst in her. The one she can't forget. This is the story about why we chose to love the ones we love, and why we just can't forget the ones who aren't right for us. Emily Giffin brings both humor and heart to her novels and has an uncanny ability to tap into the things women are really thinking and feeling. With Love the One You're With (St. Martin's Press, $24.95), she proves, once again, why she is the fastest rising star of women's fiction writing today. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 7pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

The Counterfeiters At Cosford Cinema
The true story of Salomon Sorowitsch, bohemian and counterfeiter extraordinaire. After getting arrested, he agrees to help the Nazis in an organized counterfeit operation set up to help finance the war effort. It was the biggest counterfeit money scam of all times. Prisoners were brought to Sachsenhausen from other concentration camps to implement the plan: professional printers, fastidious bank officials and simple craftsmen all became members of the top-secret counterfeiter commando. They had the choice: if they cooperated with the enemy, they had a chance to survive, as first-class prisoners in a golden cage with enough to eat and a bed to sleep in. If they sabotaged the operation, a sure death awaited them. 2007 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film. The film begins at 7pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.com.miami.edu/cosford

Dr. Yolanda Sanchez: A Home Within
It seems so simple, and yet many foster kids don't have a single, caring adult in their lives. All children need to know that at least one person keeps them in mind every day -- that someone knows their likes and dislikes, their fears and accomplishments, the essence of who they are. A Home Within is the only national organization focused exclusively on the emotional needs of foster children and youth. Through their network of volunteer clinicians they offer children a lasting, confidential, therapeutic relationship. These professionals commit to working with a current or former foster child in weekly psychotherapy sessions until treatment comes to a natural close. Tonight, Books & Books introduces the Local Chapter of A Home Within with a special guest appearance by Judge Cindy Lederman, the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and Dr. Yolanda Sanchez, founder and Clinical Director of the Miami Chapter. Together, they will introduce the organization, and present a brief video. Books & Books will donate 20% of all sales on June 6th to the local chapter of A Home Within. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com
