Lecture: Life of Philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau
Rousseau was one of the strangest figures ever to have attained wide popular influence. While living during the Enlightenment, his was of such a different mindset that almost all his thinking brought him into conflict with his peers. We think of him today as a great political and social philosopher, but his thought touched on psychology as well. Rousseau was widely read during his lifetime by the bourgeoisie as was Voltaire; but Rousseau's influence was such that he continued to be the source of inspiration for nineteenth century Romantics and twentieth century Existential philosophers. His theories influenced the twentieth century educator, Horace Mann, and Rousseau's autobiography "The Confessions" challenged the way individuals express themselves. Rousseau's thought was no less unique than his extremely neurotic personality which displayed both the despicable and pathological traces. Despite this behavior his thought remains a landmark in modern political and social philosophy. His life would make a great contemporary screen-play since his story has all the impact of what today could be compared with the "genre" of "country bumpkin makes good in the big city." It is not unreasonable to think of Rousseau as a super-star of Philosophy or the Mick Jagger of Revolution. The lecture by by Mark Greenberg takes place at Alliance Française of Miami, 618 SW 8th St. Call 305-859-7331.

Rinku Sen And Fekkah Mamdouh: The Accidental American
The Accidental American: Immigration and Citizenship in the Age of Globalization (Berrett-Koehler, $24.95) vividly illustrates the challenges and contradictions of U. S. immigration policy, and argues that, just as there is a free flow of capital in the world economy, there should be a free flow of labor. Author Rinku Sen alternates chapters telling the story of one "accidental American," coauthor Fekkak Mamdouh, a Morrocan-born waiter at a restaurant in the World Trade Center whose life was thrown into turmoil on 9/11 with a thorough critique of current immigration policy. Sen and Mamdouh describe how members of the largely immigrant food industry workforce managed to overcome divisions in the aftermath of 9/11 and form the Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York (ROC-NY) to fight for jobs and more equitable treatment. This extraordinary story serves to illuminate the racial, cultural, and economic conflicts embedded in the current immigration debate and helps frame the argument for a more humane immigration and global labor system. Russell Shorto: Descartes' Bones
On a brutal winter's day in 1650 in Stockholm, the Frenchman René Descartes, the most influential and controversial thinker of his time, was buried after a cold and lonely death far from home. Sixteen years later, the French Ambassador Hugues de Terlon secretly unearthed Descartes' bones and transported them to France. Why would this devoutly Catholic official care so much about the remains of a philosopher who was hounded from country to country on charges of atheism? Why would Descartes' bones take such a strange, serpentine path over the next 350 years -- a path intersecting some of the grandest events imaginable: the birth of science, the rise of democracy, the mind-body problem, the conflict between faith and reason? The answer lies in Descartes' famous phrase: Cogito ergo sum -- "I think, therefore I am." In an age of faith, what Descartes was proposing seemed like heresy. Yet Descartes himself was a good Catholic, who was spurred to write his incendiary book for the most personal of reasons: He had devoted himself to medicine and the study of nature, but when his beloved daughter died at the age of five, he took his ideas deeper. Descartes' Bones (Doubleday, $26) is Russell Shorto's historical detective story about the creation of the modern mind, with twists and turns leading up to the present day -- to the science museum in Paris where the philosopher's skull now resides and to the church a few kilometers away where, not long ago, a philosopher -- priest said a mass for his bones. Dexter Filkins: The Forever War
Through the eyes of Dexter Filkins, the prizewinning New York Times correspondent whose work was hailed by David Halberstam as "reporting of the highest quality imaginable," we witness the remarkable chain of events that began with the rise of the Taliban in the 1990s, continued with the attacks of 9/11, and moved on to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Filkins's narrative moves across a vast and various landscape of amazing characters and astonishing scenes: deserts, mountains, and streets of carnage; a public amputation performed by Taliban; children frolicking in minefields; skies streaked white by the contrails of B-52s; a night's sleep in the rubble of Ground Zero. Like no other book, The Forever War (Knopf, $25) allows us a visceral understanding of today's battlefields and of the experiences of the people on the ground, warriors and innocents alike. It is a brilliant, fearless work, not just about America's wars after 9/11, but ultimately about the nature of war itself. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 6pm.
