Women, The Law and HIV/AIDS in Africa
Currently 13.3 million women live with HIV and AIDS in Sub Saharan Africa. In Women, the Law, and HIV/AIDS in Africa: A Conundrum for the Legislature? (Vandeplas Press, $34.95), Florence Shu-Acquaye, professor of Law at Nova Southeastern University's Shepard Broad Law Center, highlights the challenges these women face. Antiretroviral drugs and improved technology have rendered HIV/AIDS a chronic disease in developed countries, but not so in Sub Saharan Africa. This book examines the epidemiology, manifestations and management of the problem in a setting where prevention and access to drugs is compounded by various factors. The law plays an important role and often the issue is not whether there is a law in place, but whether it is enforced. This is critical for African countries, where, without government commitment, implementation of HIV/AIDS treatment programs would possibly be unachievable. Meet the professor at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

Garrison Keillor: Liberty
First with his performances on Minnesota Public Radio's Prairie Home Companion and later in his books, Garrison Keillor has become a symbol of the small-town Midwest -- its absurdities, its stoutness, and its warmth. His popular, funny stories set in Lake Wobegon manage to evoke nostalgia for a town that never existed. Clint Bunsen is one of the old reliables in Lake Wobegon -- the treasurer of the Lutheran church and the auto mechanic who starts your car on below-zero mornings. For six years he has run the Fourth of July parade, turning what was once a line of pickup trucks and girls pushing baby carriages that hold their cats into an event of dazzling spectacle. Blazing bands, marching units, cannons, horses, a fireworks show, and the famous Living Flag -- one thousand men and women wearing red, white, or blue, standing in formation -- have attracted the attention of CNN and prompted the governor to put in an appearance as well. The town is dizzy with anticipation. Until, that is, they hear of Clint's ambition to run for Congress. They're embarrassed for him. They know him too well -- his unfortunate episodes involving vodka sours, his rocky marriage. And then there is his friendship, or whatever it is, with the twenty-four-year-old girl who dresses up as the Statue of Liberty for the parade. It's rumored that underneath those robes she is buck naked, and that her torch contains a quart of booze. In Liberty (Viking, $25.95) it's Lake Wobegon as it's always been -- good loving people who drive each other crazy. Tickets are required for this event. You will receive two (2) tickets with your purchase of Liberty at any Books & Books location. Presented in collaboration with Florida Center for the Literary Arts. Meet Garrison Keeler at Temple Judea, 5500 Granada at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

Gary Vaynerchuck's 101 Wines: 2008
Wine Library TV's Gary Vaynerchuk travels the globe tasting wines and making new discoveries that he shares bottle-by-bottle with an eager national audience via his hugely popular video blog posts and e-mail newsletters. Since the 2006 launch of his site he has rated hundreds of wines and earned a cult-like following of fans. Gary avoids the pomposity and pretense of traditional wine education, focusing instead on helping average people to develop their palates and better enjoy wine -- even if that means tasting potting soil and sniffing dirty socks! Now, Gary unveils his first list of favorites and recommendations in Gary Vaynerchuk's 101 Wines: 2008 (Rodale, $19.95). Gary's wine picks for 2008 span many prices, nations, grapes, and styles, ensuring that wine novices and sophisticated oenophiles alike will expand their wine horizons while learning more about the drink they love. Baghead At Cosford Cinema
After seeing the accolades heaped on a colleague for his laughable film at a Los Angeles film festival, Matt (Ross Partridge) decides that he can do better. With his sometime girlfriend Catherine (Elise Muller), and friends Michelle (Greta Gerwig) and Chad (Steve Zissis) in tow, they immediately set off to a cabin in the woods for the weekend to create the film that will make them all famous on the festival circuit. While Chad focuses his energy on winning the affections of uninterested Michelle, Matt comes up with the cinematic construct of a stranger with a paper bag on his head terrorizing a group of people in the woods. After the initial evening of brainstorming though, the idea becomes reality and the friends' relationships are tested as they find themselves in a truly scary situation. The result is clever, funny and refreshingly difficult to classify. Rated R. The film begins at 9pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. My Father's Paradise (Algonquin, $25.95) is Ariel Sabar's quest to reconcile present and past. As father and son travel together to today's postwar Iraq to find what's left of Yona's birthplace, Ariel brings to life the ancient town of Zakho, telling his family's story and discovering his own role in this sweeping saga. What he finds in the Sephardic Jews' millennia-long survival in Islamic lands is an improbable story of tolerance and hope. Alan Alda: Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself
Picking up where his bestselling memoir Never Have Your Dog Stuffed left off -- having been saved by emergency surgery after nearly dying on a mountaintop in Chile -- beloved actor and acclaimed author Alan Alda offers an insightful and funny look at some impossible questions he's asked himself over the years: What do I value? What, exactly, is the good life? (And what does that even mean?) In Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself (Random House, $15), Alda listens in on things he's heard himself saying at critical points in his life -- from the turbulence of the sixties, to his first Broadway show, to the birth of his children, to the ache of September 11, and beyond. Reflecting on the transitions in his life and in all our lives, he notices that "doorways are where the truth is told," and wonders if there's one thing -- art, activism, family, money, fame -- that could lead to a "life of meaning." In a book that is candid, wise, and as questioning as it is incisive, Alda amuses and moves us with his uniquely hilarious meditations on questions great and small. Please note: $5 Tickets are required for this event and can be purchased at any Books & Books location. The ticket stub may be used as a credit toward the purchase of Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself, or any other book at any Books & Books store. Presented in collaboration with Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Temple Judea, 5500 Granada Blvd at 7:30pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

The Wackness At Cosford Cinema
It's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana. Luke (Josh Peck) is a socially uncomfortable teenage pot dealer with no friends, issues with his parents, and a colossal lack of confidence with girls. He trades weed for sessions with his therapist, Dr. Squires (Sir Ben Kingsley), whose much-younger wife (Famke Janssen) is slipping away from him. Squires, a drug-addled shrink, is an unlikely role model -- but the two of them forge a friendship based on a mutual need: getting laid. The inter-generational duo set off on a crawl that takes them all over New York, where they encounter several of Luke's "business associates," including a Phish-following dreadlocked pixie (Mary Kate Olsen), a New Wave, keyboard-playing one-hit-wonder (Jane Adams), and Luke's supplier (Method Man). Propelled by an exuberant hip hop score, The Wackness captures the spell of 1994 -- a time of pagers instead of cell phones and when Tupac and Biggie were alive, but Kurt Cobain had just died. Funny and moving, The Wackness is an offbeat tale of two lost souls stumbling towards maturity. The film begins at 10pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.com.miami.edu/cosford

Fabiola Santiago: Reclaiming Paris
Marisol is an exuberant poet and historical archivist living in contemporary Miami. Like her adopted city, she's a sensual free spirit. Born in Cuba and transplanted at an early age to Florida, she nurses nostalgia for the legendary island birthplace she barely remembers. She also harbors a passion for scents, donning a new perfume each time she takes on a new relationship. After the death of her beloved grandmother and a series of sensuous but disappointing romances, Marisol realizes that she must break free from the shackles of her history, abandon lost causes, and embrace the only real home she's ever had -- her own wandering heart. Freed at last from yearning for old Havana, "the Paris of the Caribbean," this romantic exile must embrace a new life. Although she cannot reclaim Havana, she can experience the real thing -- Paris -- so Marisol sets out with an open ticket to chart the course of her future. Bridging the divide between the effervescent Miami of today and the mystical Cuba of yesteryear, Fabiola Santiago's Reclaiming Paris (Atria, $24.95) is a paean to place and memory, rich with humor, passion, and unforgettable characters. Presented in collaboration with Florida Center for the Literary Arts. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com
