M. Minnette Massey Honored
The University of Miami School of Law and South Florida's legal community will pay tribute to M. Minnette Massey, BBA '48, LLB '51, MA '52, the legendary law professor who retired in May after 57 years of teaching. This special event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30pm at the School of Law's Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge and School of Law Quadrangle located at 1311 Miller Drive. During her pioneering career at the Law School, Massey inspired students, faculty, and administrators with her understanding of and commitment to the law. Widely regarded as an outstanding professor and colleague, she was one of the first women to become a member of the faculty at the University of Miami School of Law, and was the first woman to lead the Law School as acting dean, from 1962-1965. The University of Miami School of Law's celebration in honor of M. Minnette Massey is open to all who wish to attend and pay tribute to Massey's many contributions to the Law School and the legal community. Lecture: Life of Philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau
Rousseau was one of the strangest figures ever to have attained wide popular influence. While living during the Enlightenment, his was of such a different mindset that almost all his thinking brought him into conflict with his peers. We think of him today as a great political and social philosopher, but his thought touched on psychology as well. Rousseau was widely read during his lifetime by the bourgeoisie as was Voltaire; but Rousseau's influence was such that he continued to be the source of inspiration for nineteenth century Romantics and twentieth century Existential philosophers. His theories influenced the twentieth century educator, Horace Mann, and Rousseau's autobiography "The Confessions" challenged the way individuals express themselves. Rousseau's thought was no less unique than his extremely neurotic personality which displayed both the despicable and pathological traces. Despite this behavior his thought remains a landmark in modern political and social philosophy. His life would make a great contemporary screen-play since his story has all the impact of what today could be compared with the "genre" of "country bumpkin makes good in the big city." It is not unreasonable to think of Rousseau as a super-star of Philosophy or the Mick Jagger of Revolution. The Accidental American: Immigration and Citizenship in the Age of Globalization (Berrett-Koehler, $24.95) vividly illustrates the challenges and contradictions of U. An exhibit of federal architecture designed by some of the nation's leading architects will open at the University of Miami School of Architecture. The exhibit, organized by the United States General Services Administration (GSA) is New Federal Architecture: The GSA Design Excellence Program. The event is free and open to the public. The event starts with a lecture at 6pm and is followed by the exhibition opening and reception at 7pm in the Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center at 1215 Dickinson Drive on the University's Coral Gables campus. The lecture will begin with remarks from Thomas Grooms, the Director of the GSA Design Excellence and the Arts Program. The lecture will be by Henry Smith-Miller, of the firm Smith-Miller And Hawkinson, the architect of the Champlain Land Port of Entry in New York. In addition, artist's renderings and maquettes of commissioned artworks by prominent artists Jim Dine, Sol LeWitt and Maya Lin, accompany some of the models. On a brutal winter's day in 1650 in Stockholm, the Frenchman René Descartes, the most influential and controversial thinker of his time, was buried after a cold and lonely death far from home. Sixteen years later, the French Ambassador Hugues de Terlon secretly unearthed Descartes' bones and transported them to France. Why would this devoutly Catholic official care so much about the remains of a philosopher who was hounded from country to country on charges of atheism? Why would Descartes' bones take such a strange, serpentine path over the next 350 years -- a path intersecting some of the grandest events imaginable: the birth of science, the rise of democracy, the mind-body problem, the conflict between faith and reason? The answer lies in Descartes' famous phrase: Cogito ergo sum -- "I think, therefore I am." In an age of faith, what Descartes was proposing seemed like heresy. On Columbus Day from 4pm to 5:30pm the Ponce De Leon Business Association of Coral Gables will host a forum for the four Miami-Dade Property Appraiser candidates at the University of Miami BankUnited Center. Property Appraiser Candidates Debate
On Columbus Day from 4pm to 5:30pm the Ponce De Leon Business Association of Coral Gables will host a forum for the four Miami-Dade Property Appraiser candidates at the University of Miami BankUnited Center. This free event, open to the public will be held in the Hurricane 100 Room (H-100) of the Coral Gables campus located at 1245 Dauer Drive. Former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre will serve as moderator. There is free parking on the East Parking Lot in front of the BankUnited Center. The purpose of this forum is to provide Miami-Dade's electorate more information about all four candidates for this new, elected position. The Property Appraiser will take over an office of over 300 county employees, and be responsible only to the State for his or her actions. It will be the job of the Property Appraiser to see all properties in Miami-Dade are valued fairly according to State Statutes for taxation.
