Her abstract paintings are an enigma: abstract compositions that evoke diametrically different interpretations. Some viewers see microscopic organisms; others, asteroids; still others, aquatic plant forms. Susana Rodriguez: Shadows
The Americas Collection is pleased to present a poignant exhibition brought to us by the argentine artist Susana Rodriguez. The conception of this series came about in 2006 when the artist began to observe the streets of New York City as they got attacked by the fast flowing of anonymous bodies always accompanied by their mutating shadows. Oblivious to the artist's critical eye and unaware of their own environment, the flock of human masses seemed to mechanically dance to the beat of a silent rhythm that effusively pushed them through their chaotic existence. Meet Susana Rodriguez from 7 to 10pm at The Americas Collection, 2440 Ponce. Call 305-446-5578. http://www.americascollection.com

Emily Giffin: Love the One You're With
Ellen's relationship to Andy doesn't just seem perfect on the surface, it really is perfect. She loves his family, and everything about him, including that he brings out the best in her. That is, until Ellen unexpectedly runs into Leo. The one who got away. The one who brought out the worst in her. The one she can't forget. This is the story about why we chose to love the ones we love, and why we just can't forget the ones who aren't right for us. Emily Giffin brings both humor and heart to her novels and has an uncanny ability to tap into the things women are really thinking and feeling. With Love the One You're With (St. Martin's Press, $24.95), she proves, once again, why she is the fastest rising star of women's fiction writing today. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 7pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

The Counterfeiters At Cosford Cinema
The true story of Salomon Sorowitsch, bohemian and counterfeiter extraordinaire. After getting arrested, he agrees to help the Nazis in an organized counterfeit operation set up to help finance the war effort. It was the biggest counterfeit money scam of all times. Prisoners were brought to Sachsenhausen from other concentration camps to implement the plan: professional printers, fastidious bank officials and simple craftsmen all became members of the top-secret counterfeiter commando. They had the choice: if they cooperated with the enemy, they had a chance to survive, as first-class prisoners in a golden cage with enough to eat and a bed to sleep in. If they sabotaged the operation, a sure death awaited them. 2007 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film. The film begins at 7pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.com.miami.edu/cosford

Dr. Yolanda Sanchez: A Home Within
It seems so simple, and yet many foster kids don't have a single, caring adult in their lives. All children need to know that at least one person keeps them in mind every day -- that someone knows their likes and dislikes, their fears and accomplishments, the essence of who they are. A Home Within is the only national organization focused exclusively on the emotional needs of foster children and youth. Through their network of volunteer clinicians they offer children a lasting, confidential, therapeutic relationship. These professionals commit to working with a current or former foster child in weekly psychotherapy sessions until treatment comes to a natural close. Tonight, Books & Books introduces the Local Chapter of A Home Within with a special guest appearance by Judge Cindy Lederman, the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and Dr. Yolanda Sanchez, founder and Clinical Director of the Miami Chapter. Together, they will introduce the organization, and present a brief video. Books & Books will donate 20% of all sales on June 6th to the local chapter of A Home Within. And as his daughter, in a childlike attempt to stop the wave of baseless arrests, engages in illicit activities, his son, sent to New York before the rise of the Ayatollahs, struggles to find happiness even as he realizes that his family may soon be forced to embark on a journey of incalculable danger. Neil Johnson: Two's Company, Three is Complexity
What do traffic jams, stock market crashes, and wars have in common? They can all be explained by complexity, an unsolved puzzle which is the most important scientific development since general relativity, and considered by many to be the 'Science of Sciences'. In Two's Company, Three is Complexity (Oneworld, $24.95), Neil Johnson draws on his experience as a leading researcher in the field to explore the surprising ways in which order eventually emerges from the interaction of all things. Relevant across the whole breadth of social studies and science from pubs to plants, Johnson utilizes a wealth of real-life examples as he leads us on a brilliantly entertaining romp through chaos, game theory, economics, and even jazz, ultimately proving that complexity lies at the very heart of the Universe itself. Moose: A Memoir of Fat Camp
While pregnant with twins, one sentence uttered by her doctor sent Stephanie Klein reeling: "You need to gain fifty pounds." Instantly, an adolescence filled with insecurity, awkwardness, disappointment, and embarrassment came flooding back. Though she was determined to gain the weight for the health of her babies, she could only express what deep fear this caused in her by telling her doctor simply, "I used to be fat." In Moose: A Memoir of Fat Camp (HarperCollins, $24.95) Klein's passion and wrenching honesty fill the pages with attitude and heart, when as a mother-to-be, she's forced to confront her adolescent struggles and angst, recounting an angry childhood with a weak mother, and how a summer at fat camp shaped more than just her body. It shaped her life. More than a story about weight loss, Moose reminds everyone what it was like to feel like an outsider, to desperately seek the right outfit, the right slang, the best comeback, or whatever that unattainable something is that would finally make you fit in. Calling upon her childhood diary entries to jog her memory, Klein opens up and shares her deepest thoughts and feelings from that turbulent, hopeful time, baring her soul and making her heartache palpable. Lena is a fingerprint expert at a crime lab in the small city of Syracuse, New York, where winters are cold and deep. Suddenly, a series of crib deaths -- indistinguishable from SIDS except for the fevered testimony of one distraught mother with connections in high places -- draws the attention of the police and the national media and raises the possibility of the inconceivable: could there be a serial infant murderer on the loose? Orphaned as a child, out of place as an adult, gifted with delicate and terrifying powers of intuition, Lena finds herself playing a critical role in the case. But then there is the mystery of her own childhood to solve... Could the improbable deaths of a half-dozen babies be somehow connected to her own improbable survival? Continental Shifts: The Art of Edoaurd Duval-Carrie
Edited by Edward J. Sullivan, Continental Shifts: The Art of Edouard Duval-Carrie (Haitian Cultural Alliance/Arte al Dia) features the magical realism captured in both painting and sculpture by Duval-Carrie, whose art exhibits a dynamic blend of Afro-Caribbean culture, fantasy, and spectacular ornamentation. "Edouard Duval-Carrie is one of Haiti's most distinguished modern artists," says Sullivan. "Completely trained in the classical manner in ateliers in Paris, Montreal, and the U.S., he departs from the visual traditions usually associated with the mid-20th century 'Haitian School' artists and updates them through a careful and deliberate manipulation, imbuing his images with the iconography of voodoo spirituality, Haitian politics, and the trauma of life as it is lived in a nation in flux."
