Michael Dobbs: One Minute to Midnight
In October 1962, at the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union appeared to be sliding inexorably toward a nuclear conflict over the placement of missiles in Cuba. Veteran Washington Post reporter Michael Dobbs has pored over previously untapped American, Soviet, and Cuban sources to produce the most authoritative book yet on the Cuban missile crisis. In his hour-by-hour chronicle of those near-fatal days, Dobbs reveals some startling new incidents that illustrate how close we came to Armageddon. As the story unfolds, Dobbs brings us onto the decks of American ships patrolling Cuba; inside sweltering Soviet submarines and missile units as they ready their warheads; and onto the streets of Miami, where anti-Castro exiles plot the dictator's overthrow. Based on exhaustive new research and told in breathtaking prose, One Minute to Midnight (Knopf, $28.95) is a riveting account of history's most dangerous hours, full of lessons for our time. Presented in collaboration with the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies at the University of Miami. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Garth Stein: The Art of Racing in the Rain
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man. A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain (HarperCollins, $23.95) is Garth Stein's beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life... as only a dog could tell it. Harry, Revised (Bloomsbury, $24.99) is the hilarious and tender story of Harry Rent, a down-on-his-luck widower, who tries to reinvent himself following his wife's untimely death. From Katie Hickman, the bestselling author of five previous books, including Daughters of Britannia and Courtesans, comes a lush, ancient tale of treacherous secrets, forbidden love, and murder in an Ottoman palace. It is the key to a story that has been locked away for four centuries -- the story of a British sea captain's daughter held captive in the sultan's harem. Constantinople, 1599. Spellbinding and steeped in mystery and sexual intrigue, The Aviary Gate (Bloomsbury, $25.99) transports readers to exotic sixteenth-century Constantinople, offering the rarest glimpse into the forbidden confines of the sultan's harem. Rear Window At Cosford Cinema

Photographer L.B. "Jeff" Jeffries is a voyeur by trade -- a professional photographer sidelined by an accident while on assignment. His immersion in the human drama (and comedy) visible from his window is a by-product of his boredom, underlined by the disapproval of his girlfriend and a wisecracking visiting nurse. Yet when the invalid wife of his neighbor disappears, he enlists the two women to help him determine where she has gone. Starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter and Raymond Burr. The film begins at 8:45pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.com.miami.edu/cosford

On Valentine's Day, Anne Marie and several other widows get together and begin a list of twenty wishes, things they always wanted to do but never did. Anne Marie's list starts with: Find one good thing about life. She begins to act on her wishes, and when she volunteers at a local school, an eight-year-old girl named Ellen enters her life. As Ellen helps Anne Marie complete her list of twenty wishes, they both learn that wishes can come true, but not necessarily in the way you expect. Dr. Mark Brown: Conquer Back & Neck Pain
In Conquer Back and Neck Pain (Sunrise River Press, $11.95), renowned spine surgeon Dr. Mark Brown, MD, PhD, explains exactly what causes back pain and why humans are so predisposed to spinal problems. He provides a detailed questionnaire that allows you to identify which of seven types of back pain you are experiencing, and then he explains each of those types in clear and easy-to-understand language. Contrary to what you might expect from a spinal surgeon, Dr. Brown actually advocates against turning to surgery in most cases of spinal pain. In his 35 years of experience, he has found that the vast majority of back pain cases will resolve with minimal treatment. In fact, the very best thing you can do is to simply allow your body to heal itself by avoiding the many treatment pitfalls that people with back pain commonly fall into when looking for relief. Avoiding these mistakes, along with incorporating gentle aerobic exercise, will almost always allow you to "walk off" your back or neck pain naturally.
