Oscar Hijuelos: Dark Dude
He didn't say good-bye. He didn't leave a phone number. And he didn't plan on coming back -- ever. In Wisconsin, Rico could blend in. His light hair and lighter skin wouldn't make him the "dark dude" or the punching bag for the whole neighborhood. The Midwest is the land of milk and honey, but for Rico Fuentes, it's really a last resort. Trading Harlem for Wisconsin, though, means giving up on a big part of his identity. And when Rico no longer has to prove that he's Latino, he almost stops being one. Except he can never have an ordinary white kid's life, because there are some things that can't be left behind, that can't be cut loose or forgotten. These are the things that will be with you forever... These are the things that will follow you a thousand miles away. For anyone who loved The Outsiders -- and for anyone who's ever felt like one -- Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Oscar Hijuelos brings to life a haunting choice and an unforgettable journey about identity, misidentity, and all that we take with us when we run away in Dark Dude (Athenaeum, $16.99, ages 12 and up). David Ebershoff: The 19th Wife
Sweeping and lyrical, spellbinding and unforgettable, David Ebershoff's The 19th Wife (Random House, $26) combines epic historical fiction with a modern murder mystery to create a brilliant novel of literary suspense. It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States. Soon after Ann Eliza's story begins, a second exquisite narrative unfolds a tale of murder involving a polygamist family in present-day Utah. Jordan Scott, a young man who was thrown out of his fundamentalist sect years earlier, must re-enter the world that cast him aside in order to discover the truth behind his father's death. And as Ann Eliza's narrative intertwines with that of Jordan's search, readers are pulled deeper into the mysteries of love and faith. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Irvine Welsh: Crime
In the wake of a nasty child-murder case, Detective Inspector Ray Lennox of the Edinburgh PD has suffered a full-scale breakdown. He's been placed on leave for mental re-tuning and takes off for a few days of sun in Miami. From there, Crime (Norton, $24.95) becomes an unmistakably Welshian (as in author Irvine Welsh, of Trainspotting fame) blend of the macabre and the psychologically astute, as Lennox faces a dwindling supply of anti-depressants, a bridal-magazine toting fiancee who wants him to think seriously about floral arrangements, and some coke-happy locals who lead him back into old habits. Is he really in the right shape to be playing knight-errant to a terrified ten-year-old girl? Will his best instincts and worst judgments get them both killed, or find him the redemption he seeks? After Party at White Room, presented by Map Magazine, Bombay Sapphire, W.W. Norton and Books & Books. 1306 North Miami Avenue starting at 10pm. Free admission and martinis for all who say "Crime." Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 8pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

Free admission and martinis for all who say "Crime." Starting at the height of the Reagan era and ending in the new millennium, Matrimony (Knopf, $23.95) is about love and friendship, about money and ambition, desire and tensions of faith. In its emotional honesty, its luminous prose, its generosity and wry wit, Josh Henkin gives us a beautifully detailed portrait of what it means to share a life with someone–to do it when you're young, and to try to do it afresh on the brink of middle age. Brad Meltzer: Book of Lies
Brad Meltzer, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Book of Fate, returns with his most thrilling and emotionally powerful novel to date -- The Book of Lies (Grand Central Publishing). In Chapter Four of the Bible, Cain kills Abel. It is the world's most famous murder. But the Bible is silent about one key detail: the weapon Cain used to kill his brother. That weapon is still lost to history. In 1932, Mitchell Siegel was killed by three gunshots to his chest. While mourning, his son dreamed of a bulletproof man and created the world's greatest hero: Superman. And like Cain's murder weapon, the gun used in this unsolved murder has never been found. Today in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Cal Harper comes face-to-face with his family's greatest secret: his long-lost father, who's been shot with a gun that traces back to Mitchell Siegel's 1932 murder. But before Cal can ask a single question, he and his father are attacked by a ruthless killer tattooed with the ancient markings of Cain. And so begins the chase for the world's first murder weapon. What does Cain, history's greatest villain, have to do with Superman, the world's greatest hero? And what do two murders, committed thousands of years apart, have in common? Presented in collaboration with Florida Center for the Literary Arts. Meet the author at Books And Books, 265 Aragon at 7pm. Call 305-442-4408. http://www.booksandbooks.com

Singing In The Rain at Cosford Cinema
After years of honing his skills on the vaudeville stage, hoofer Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has finally reached the top and become a star of the silent screen. He has his confidence shattered when ingenue Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) dismisses film actors as "shadows" without substance. After getting over the insult, he falls hard for her - much to the consternation of his costar, the sexy, selfish Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who wants Don all to herself. But they have career troubles too. The wild popularity of The Jazz Singer has studios scrambling to change from silent films to talkies, and Lina's shrill voice and Don's stiff acting left the preview audiences roaring with laughter. There's only once way to save that movie and their careers -- turn the film into a musical, with Kathy secretly dubbing Lina's lines and songs. The film begins at 7pm at Cosford Cinema on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. Call 305-284-4861. http://www.com.miami.edu/cosford
